First Person POV: Historian Francis Fukuyama Takes You Along on His Personal Drone Flight
With President Barack Obama recently signing into law the Federal Aviation Administration’s bill that would modernize flight to include GPS technology and in turn open up the sky to commercial and private unmanned aerial vehicles, there are not only concerns over stronger oversight by law enforcement but also in hobbyist drone operation.
(Related: Send in the drones…don’t bother, they’re here)
For example, drones have been used by the media to capture aerial footage of Russian protests and riots in Poland. A civilian drone operated in Texas recently spotted a meat packing plant violating laws by dumping animal products into a local stream.
The Daily Mail reports that U.S. historian Francis Fukuyama, known for writing The End of History during the fall of the Berlin wall, is one of many taking on DIY drone projects. According to the Daily Mail, the popularity of Fukuyama’s videos and blog posts on the Internet regarding his amateur drone operation has some continuing the debate over civilian drone use:
The historian wrote: “I have always wanted to have my own drone that could send back a live video feed.
“It is extremely easy to build a drone now that can do not just surveillance but can carry rather large payloads.
“I want to have my drone before the government makes them illegal. The U.S has been fighting such low-tech enemies lately that we haven’t thought through the nature of a world in which lots of people have sophisticated drones, not just other countries but private individuals. One somewhat worrying thing is that virtually all of this equipment comes from China or Taiwan.”
Here is one of Fukuyama’s videos:
U.S. Air Force Pilot John Robb wrote on his blog that if terrorists were to use drones, a full ban on civilian drone use would be instituted. According to the Daily Mail, one commenter said that the “cat’s out of the bag on drone tech,” implying that even if laws were passed, there would still be violations.
N.C. Mom Behind Blaze Exclusive on Daughter‘s Lunch Says School Hasn’t Personally Apologized
Last week The Blaze reported exclusively on a second North Carolina mother who said her 4-year-old daughter’s homemade lunch was replaced with cafeteria food after it was determined to be lacking certain nutritional requirements.
Diane Zambrano came forward after state and school officials said there was a misunderstanding when another preschooler was told the same thing. After Zambrano told her story to The Blaze, Fox News reached out to us to get in contact with Zambrano and interview her on the air.
She appeared on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday morning to share her story on camera:

The lunch Zambrano packed for her daughter Jazlyn contained a cheese and salami sandwich on a wheat bun with apple juice. The lunch she got in the cafeteria was chicken nuggets, a sweet potato, bread and milk.
During the interview, Zambrano recounted how her daughter gave her a note from the principal about the specific food groups homemade lunches must contain. The note said though “we welcome students to bring lunches from home … it must be a nutritious, balanced meal with the above requirements. Students, who do not bring a healthy lunch, will be offered the missing portions which may result in a fee from the cafeteria.”
What upset her most, Zambrano told Fox, was “the fact that they took upon themselves to make the decision for me as a parent.”
“We believe that we‘re in a country that we’re allowed to do decisions for ourselves and the fact that they take it away from us, what are they going to take away next?” she said.
Officials at the Hoke County Schools Superintendent‘s Office initially told The Blaze they had no information about what happened with Jazlyn’s lunch, and reached again said they had “no information at this time.” In a statement to Fox News, the district said “Hoke County Schools has taken appropriate action to safeguard against any repetition of these situations in the future.”
Zambrano told Fox she has not received a personal apology and the school‘s statement was the first response from them she’s heard regarding the situation.
Airline Passengers Tackle Unruly Man Allegedly Screaming ‘Allah Is Great!’
A Continental Airlines passenger was tackled by fellow fliers and later detained after he caused a disturbance on a flight from Portland to Houston on Tuesday. The man reportedly tried to light an electronic cigarette and began screaming “Allah is great!”
KHOU-TV has the report, which also notes the disturbance may have started when the man and his friend were trying to sit by each other and couldn’t. It also includes some emotional interviews with fellow passengers:
“He was screaming, ‘Allah is great, Allah is great,’ you know, and it kinda worries you when all of that happens,” a passenger on the flight told the news outlet.
According to KHOU, the man has not been charged with anything yet, but he was taken into custody once the plane landed in Portland. The pilot had apparently turned the plane around once the disturbance ensued.
According to Continental, though, there was not security threat.
